Torrechiara Castle in Italy
Extensively rebuilt in the mid-15th century from its earlier mediaeval origins, Torrechiara is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the province of Parma. As the Renaissance was flowering throughout Italy, Torrechiara Castle was being redesigned as a fortress of massive stone towers and parapets bound by a triple wall.The imposing structure with its fierce façade was certainly meant to evoke fear in any potential enemy. But Torrechiara was also built as a home for Bianca Pellegrini, the beloved mistress of the castle's owner, Pier Maria Rossi. Beyond the battlements and within the heavy castle walls are extensive and well-preserved frescoes celebrating their love. The castle's setting is no less romantic: From some places, visitors here can view both the high towers of the castle, and the high peaks of the Apennine mountain range.

A view over Staithes in North Yorkshire
This picturesque coastal hamlet was once one of the largest fishing ports on England's North East coast. It's also where British explorer Captain James Cook lived during his teenage years. With its quaint cottages, cosy harbour and winding, cobbled streets, Staithes has long been a magnet for artists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the historic village was home to a community of painters known as the Staithes Group, who were inspired by French Impressionists and the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire coast. The art colony worked together en plein air, in oil or watercolour, and included renowned artists such as Dame Laura Knight. Numerous towns and cities along Egypt's Red Sea coast attract visitors with high-end hotels, luxurious beaches and bountiful sun. Such is the glamorous vibe that the area is dubbed the Red Sea Riviera, in homage to the Italian and French versions of seaside chic. The translucent water in our image laps at the shores of Sharm El Sheikh, one of the dozens of resort cities along this stretch of the Sinai Peninsula. Besides catering for sun-seekers, the region features several nature parks, both on land and extending into the rich coral reef ecosystem just offshore. While the Kaiser Mountains certainly look formidable, they’ve been home to humans for a very long time indeed. This sub-range of the Northern Limestone Alps holds evidence of Stone Age settlements, including the Tischofer Cave, said to be ‘the oldest known uncontested site of human occupation in Tyrol’. And for a while, between the late 19th century and World War I, these mountains were the focus of the wider region’s mountaineers and explorers.
Of course, it’s not only people who find the place hospitable – in 1963 a nature reserve was opened to protect the rich diversity of wildlife found here. Residents include the familiar – the mountain hare and golden eagle – and the unfamiliar – the Alpine chough and (excuse us) edible dormouse.
