Cabo de la Vela headland in Colombia

This rugged cape was spotted by the Spanish explorer Juan de la Cosa in 1499, and it was one of the first places visited by Europeans on the mainland of South America. When the Europeans arrived, the Indigenous Arawak people inhabited this portion of what is now the Guajira Peninsula of Colombia. Their descendants, the Wayuu people, still live here. Cabo de la Vela is sacred to the Wayuu, as they believe it's a gathering place of their deceased and a gateway to the afterlife. The landscape is suitably dramatic for such a place – it's within Colombia's Caribbean coast region, where rugged rocks and promontories dusted with ochre sand meet the aquamarine sea.

American Samoa (not to be confused with the nearby island nation of Samoa) is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean. Sitting at 14 degrees below the equator, the archipelago is considered the southernmost point in the US. The volcanic islands and atolls that make up the terrain are rich in biodiversity. Ancient palaeotropical rainforests and coastal reef systems are home to a variety of native fauna, including a couple of megabat species and endangered hawksbill turtles. It's also said that the waters around American Samoa are home to the largest amount of marine biodiversity in US territory: Some 950 fish species and 250 coral species call these islands home.

Torrechiara Castle in Italy

Extensively rebuilt in the mid-15th century from its earlier mediaeval origins, Torrechiara is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the province of Parma. As the Renaissance was flowering throughout Italy, Torrechiara Castle was being redesigned as a fortress of massive stone towers and parapets bound by a triple wall.

The imposing structure with its fierce façade was certainly meant to evoke fear in any potential enemy. But Torrechiara was also built as a home for Bianca Pellegrini, the beloved mistress of the castle's owner, Pier Maria Rossi. Beyond the battlements and within the heavy castle walls are extensive and well-preserved frescoes celebrating their love. The castle's setting is no less romantic: From some places, visitors here can view both the high towers of the castle, and the high peaks of the Apennine mountain range.
